Summer School on “Democratic Decline and Resilience”

Organized by the CERIUM-FMSH Chair on Global Governance
We are inviting applications from doctoral students for a doctoral summer school on the topic “Democratic Decline and Resilience”. The summer school will take the form of a five-day program, and consists of lectures by experts in the field as well as time for the presentation of students’ papers. The summer school will cover a broad range of topics, with attention for varying challenges that democratic countries are facing – including growing diversity and prejudice, affective polarization, and democratic backsliding.
Program
- Monday 26 August: Democratic erosion and political accountability – Jessica Gottlieb (University of Houston)
- Tuesday 27 August: Diversity and prejudice in democratic societies – Donghyun Danny Choi (Brown University)
- Wednesday 28 August: Affective polarization – Shanto Iyengar (Stanford University)
- Thursday 29 August: Democratic support and attitudes towards democratic backsliding – Dietlind Stolle (McGill University)
- Friday 30 August: Political communication and misinformation – Sumitra Badrinathan (American University)
Format
Each day, a different lecturer will cover a specific topic during the morning (see detailed program). In the afternoon, students will present a research paper or dissertation project, and will receive feedback on their work from the professor teaching the morning course as well as from fellow students. Accepted students will be asked to circulate their projects or papers by 12 August 2024.
Audience
Doctoral students in political science who conduct research on democracy, challenges to democracy, elections, public opinion, and political communication. We are seeking for a mix of beginning and more advanced doctoral students. Beginning students can present their dissertation project, and the more advanced students can present a research paper. The maximum number of participants is limited to 15.
Costs and venue
There are no registration fees for this summer school. Lunches are provided and accommodation at the ZUM residences of the Université de Montréal will be covered for participants not based in Montreal.
Participants have to secure their own funding for travel to Montreal.
