3rd Leuven-Montréal Winter School on Elections

3rd Leuven-Montréal Winter School on Elections

The 3rd edition of our PhD program on elections took place at the University of Leuven (Belgium) from 25 February to 5 March 2017.

Courses this year were given by Ruth Dassonneville (Université de Montréal), Michael S. Lewis-Beck (University of Iowa), Eva Anduiza (Autonomous University Barcelona), Kees Aarts (University of Groningen), David Farrell (University College Dublin), Elias Dinas (University of Oxford), Marc Hooghe (University of Leuven) and Ann-Kristin Kölln (University of Leuven). The topics covered were electoral volatility and dealignment, election forecasting, populism, party leaders, electoral systems, causal inference and voter turnout.

24 PhD students from 12 different countries participated to the 3rd edition of the program. Each student presented a paper, and received comments from one of the faculty of the program and fellow students. Each year, the Victor D’Hondt prize is awarded for the best student paper. This year, the jury awarded this prize to Frederico Ferreira da Silva (European University Institute) for his paper ‘Fostering turnout? Assessing leaders’ capacity to mobilise voters’.
